Al Jazeera Shows Video of CPT Hostages
While the news left me a little chilly, it was good to see the news today of a video of the Christian Peacemaker Team hostages still alive. Of course, it’s just video, but hope is what keeps people of faith going. The demands from their abductors are the same, which is expected but unfortunate.
My main thought about all of this is that it’s good to see the press covering the stories of hostages in Iraq again. According to the AP story I linked to above, more than 250 hostages have been taken - people trying to help Iraqis and have been written off by our current federal administration as the neccessary cost of war.
Maybe it’s time to begin to ask the news networks for a space of time to commemorate those non-combatants whose lives have been torn apart by this war.

Something that has been disparaging to me in conversing with some rather conservative Evangelicals is that they viewed the hostages as partly to blame or even deserving of their capture. That may be so but I beleive that God call’s us to do dangerous things in his name. If God calls me to die or risk death in his name then so be it. These peace workers knew the risk and they counted the cost, we should also, and like them we should come up with the same answer “go”.
